A take-away from Dr. Salerno’s talk: “For your health care prevention is the best cure. Knowledge is what is important right now – being an informed consumer. You are not a patient – you are a consumer. You need to go into your medical visit with facts. You may only have 10 minutes with your doctor so at each visit you need to make the most of those 10 minutes with knowledge and questions. You should see your doctor about every 6 to 8 weeks and have a plan for each of those 10 minute sessions when you actually see your provider during that visit. Like a book with chapters, saying I am going to do heart health this visit, fall prevention next, kidney health next, cancer screening and so on. You should not be content with seeing your physician once a year for an annual physical. You want to have an ongoing dialogue with your doctor – not a one time monologue. Start thinking of your health in terms of preventive maintenance and not as an emergency crisis follow-up service”. Treat your body as well as you treat your car.
