In addition to being a pillar of healthcare education in New Jersey, Dr. Alexander Salerno also lends his voice to health causes throughout the country by making himself available to speak on key medical issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, to name a few. To that end, Dr. Salerno has worked on a Kidney Disease awareness campaign with Ogilvy Public Relations and Alonzo Mourning in addition to conducting several PSAs for DSI and ASH.

More about Doctor Salerno:

Dr. Alexander Salerno M.D. /M.H.A, is the founder and medical director of Urban Healthcare Initiative Program (UHIP), which is a 501c3 non-profit that has existed for over 5 years and whose focus has been on delivering healthcare education to urban communities (soup kitchens, boarding homes, congregations, barber shops, etc.), for the purpose of bridging healthcare outcomes disparities among minority groups and those with behavioral health disorders. In April 2015, UHIP achievements have been recognized and in turn selected as a finalist in the “Innovation Hero – Organization” category in the 2014 NJBIZ Healthcare Heroes awards program. This is Dr. Salerno’s second nomination in less than 5 years. In 2011, he was nominated as Physician of the Year for his work with the Senior Healthcare Outreach Program (SHOP). SHOP, also founded by Dr. Salerno, has provided house calls to seniors and homebound patients in three counties (Essex, Passaic, and Union) for over 12 years. So while others talk about population health programs, Dr. Salerno has been providing them for over a decade and expanding on new, innovative models of care and healthcare awareness. Along with NJBIZ, Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey is one of the many event sponsors.

Regarding Salerno Medical Associates, Dr. Salerno is the lead physician of a 49-member staff that has served for two generations, 75 years cumulatively, with over 15,000 active patients in the urban communities of Newark and East Orange. This practice has met and exceeded HEDIS and PQRS measures and for three years in a row has been cited by United Healthcare Insurance for its stellar healthcare outcomes. Since January 2014, with Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey, Salerno Medical has participated with the Horizon Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) program. Based on a March 2015 report, we are very close to achieving level three designation in the short 15 months since the initiative began, once again demonstrating that we meet and exceed healthcare benchmark standards. Salerno Medical operates 6 days a week and Mon-Thursday operates 12-hour days in order to meet the demand of its customer marketplace. So whether it’s a house call program, a non-profit health literacy program, or a multi-specialty practice operating nearly 80 hours a week, Dr. Salerno applies his board certification as well as his master’s in health administration/public health in order to meet the ever-changing demands of our diverse community.
