Hand and Wrist Conditions

Hand and Wrist Conditions

Offered in East Orange and Newark, NJ

Our hands and wrists are incredibly complex, comprising 27 bones and nearly 30 joints. We rely on this intricate system of interconnecting components to work, study, play, and more, and when pain occurs, it has a significant impact on our quality of life. Serving patients in Newark, New Jersey, Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn of Prospect Spine and Pain (PSP) diagnoses and treats a wide range of common hand and wrist conditions with minimally invasive, non-surgical modalities. As a board-certified, fellowship-trained Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician, she offers patients the experienced, compassionate care required to eliminate pain and restore function.

Signs and Symptoms of Wrist and Hand Conditions

While every hand and wrist condition is different, many share similar symptoms. If you notice any of the following, be sure to contact Prospect Spine and Pain (PSP) to schedule an appointment:

  • Sharp or dull pain
  • Tingling or a pins-and-needles sensation
  • Swelling in the wrist, hand, or fingers
  • Loss of strength
  • Inability to grip items or form a fist
  • Numbness
  • Redness
  • A warming sensation in the joints

When you visit our practice with any of these symptoms, Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn will assess your condition with advanced physical examination techniques. High-tech medical imaging can also provide greater insight into the cause of your symptoms and the condition of your wrist or hand. Rather than treat your symptoms, Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn always strives to identify their cause and provide the most accurate diagnosis possible.

Wrist and Hand Conditions We Treat

No matter the cause of your symptoms, every patient at Prospect Spine and Pain (PSP) receives a custom treatment plan that addresses the whole patient. Through the use of minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn offers patients relief from pain and other symptoms and helps avoid surgical procedures. The conditions we diagnose and treat include:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: The median nerve extends through our forearm through a passage in our wrist, the carpal tunnel. Over time, repetitive motions such as using a computer, writing, or other work tasks, may cause it to become inflamed.
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome: Like carpal tunnel syndrome, this condition sometimes called ulnar nerve entrapment occurs when the ulnar nerve passing through the cubital tunnel becomes irritated.
  • Trigger finger: The tendons in our fingers are surrounded by fibrous sheaths that offer protection and support lubrication. When this sheath becomes inflamed, it narrows and may leave the finger frozen in a bent position, causing a snap when bending or straightening.
  • Tendonitis (tendinitis): This occurs when a tendon in the wrist or hand becomes inflamed, resulting in discomfort and swelling.
  • De Quervain’s tenosynovitis: Physicians aren’t sure what causes De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, but repeated motions of the hand are known to worsen this condition affecting the tendons located on the radial side of the wrist.
  • Osteoarthritis: As we age, the cartilage that cushions the ends of our bones wears, causing friction within the joints that results in pain and mobility limitations.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Unlike more common osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack healthy cells. This leads to pain and swelling in the wrists, hands, and other parts of the body.
