Elbow Conditions

Elbow Conditions

Offered in East Orange and Newark, NJ

Three bones comprise the elbow joint, including the humerus (upper arm bone), ulna (forearm bone on the pinky side), and radius (forearm bone on the thumb side). Our elbows are involved in almost everything we do, making them extremely prone to overuse injuries, degenerative conditions, and other disorders. At Prospect Spine and Pain (PSP) in Newark, New Jersey, our board-certified, fellowship-trained Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn, a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician, is standing by to diagnose the root cause of your pain and customize a minimally invasive, non-surgical pain management plan to treat your elbow condition.

Signs and Symptoms of Elbow Conditions

When something goes wrong with your elbow, whether due to age, wear-and-tear, or one-time injury, common elbow conditions share a number of symptoms, such as:

  • Pain, swelling, and bruising in the elbow area
  • Difficulty bending or lifting the arm
  • Limited range of motion
  • Symptoms that worsen over time
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Pins-and-needles sensations, warmth, weakness, numbness, or other abnormal feelings
  • And more…

At Prospect Spine and Pain (PSP), Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn first analyzes patients’ symptoms through advanced physical examination techniques, state-of-the-art medical imaging, and more. To make an accurate diagnosis, she will pinpoint the underlying cause of the symptoms and rule out the possibility of the symptoms being caused by a non-elbow-related condition.

Elbow Issues We Treat

Patients under Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn’s care receive personalized pain management treatment plans that are minimally invasive in nature, may prevent the need for surgery, and treat the whole patient – not just their symptoms. For patients experiencing chronic elbow pain, they can take peace of mind in Dr. Maria Cabodevilla-Conn’s expertise in treating conditions such as:

  • Bursitis of the elbow: When bursae, liquid-filled sacs cushioning tissues, bones, tendons, and muscles, become inflamed in the elbow region, it is known as olecranon bursitis and can result in painful symptoms.
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome: Also known as ulnar nerve entrapment, this condition occurs with the compression of the ulnar nerve, which begins at the fingers and ends in the neck and is responsible for powering motion in the hand and lower arm.
  • Golfer’s or baseball elbow (medial epicondylitis): This condition affects the medial side of the elbow joint (from the elbow to the inside of the wrist) and is the result of damage to tendons responsible for bending the wrist in the direction of the palm.
  • Osteoarthritis: Often referred to as degenerative joint disease and the most common form of arthritis, this condition occurs when bones rub against each other after their protective cartilage wears away over time. It can be accompanied by bone spurs, disc degeneration, and spinal stenosis.
  • Sprained elbow: This occurs when the ligaments surrounding the elbow joint sustain an injury.
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis): Typically due to repetitive wrist and arm motions, this condition is characterized by swollen tendons responsible for bending the wrist backward (away from the palm).
